I was in the Magic Kingdom recently and needed a quick service dinner. I happened to be in Frontier Land, and feeling like I had been out on the plains too long given the heat and humidity, sauntering into Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Café seemed appropriate. I hadn’t been there in years, quite frankly, and Bill revised the menu recently.
The Grilled Mesa Flatbread ($10.49) caught my attention, so that was the choice.
On my tray, the selection certainly looked appetizing, and it was piled high. The flatbread was offered with sweet potatoes, stewed pinto beans, plant-based pepper jack “cheese,” shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, and plant-based lime crema. I added the beef protein option.
Unfortunately, the dish looked far more interesting than it tasted. There was a touch of southwest spice, and a general balance of flavors and texture. But the beef was merely adequate, and the flat bread itself lacked any softness, coming across like cardboard. This was an option that I probably would’ve been disappointed with if I was visiting a fast food place, never mind the new menu at Pecos Bill.
This disappointing dish earned just one fork out of five, and I’m hoping that the new bowls on the menu will deliver more flavor upon follow-up visits.
