I remember getting excited as a kid when my mother served potato pancakes for dinner. So, I had to stop at the Bauernmarkt food booth at the Germany pavilion during the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival.
In fact, there wasn’t just one, but two potato pancake offerings on the menu.
There was the Potato Pancakes with House-made Applesauce ($5.25) and the Potato Pancakes with Ham and Onion ($5.50).
Each dish offered a hearty portion of potato pancakes that were delicious, but leaned more toward a potato casserole than the potato pancakes I recall growing up. But they worked – no complaints.
The differences came with the topping. The traditional apple sauce worked, though I have to admit that I felt like there should have been a stronger apple-sauce flavor, if that makes sense.
Meanwhile, I wasn’t sure what to expect with the ham and onion, but it worked really well. The onion flavor didn’t overwhelm, and instead, nicely complemented the small chunks of ham and the white sauce with a certain smokiness to it.
I’ll take these potato pancakes alongside the ones I recall from childhood. A potato pancake festival!
